Saturdays at Southlands: A Day at the Market
The Southlands Tsawwassen Farmers’ Market, located in the Market Square, is officially underway. Every Saturday from 10am to 2pm the market is bustling. With more than 30 different vendors, the choice of local goods to shop from is bountiful and one of the favourite ways our community members connect with each other and the land that surrounds them.
Enjoy fresh eats right at the market from one of the many food vendors, or pick up some groceries to make a feast at home later. Either way, we have an extensive list of food vendors that change every week including Empanada Gals, Hails Home Bakery, Just Peachy Fruits, Ladner Pierogies, KAAJ Artisan Chocolate, and so many more. We also have a variety of beverage options including Chai Ghai, Lemonade by Elie, Barnside Brewing Co., and nearby Prado Cafe.
For that true farm to table experience, the locally grown produce is a must — seasonal, fresh and grown in the neighbourhood, it doesn’t get much closer to home than buying produce from the market. Visit the farmers at Salt & Harrow to purchase produce straight from the source. Located in Boundary Bay just steps from the Southlands Grange building, Salt & Harrow’s 32 acre farm is the growing place for more than 50 different organic fruits, vegetables, legumes and herbs, and they also produce heritage hen eggs. Their farmers take the utmost care of their soil to ensure nutrient-dense food and sustainable farming practices, resulting in artisan quality organic produce. The hardworking farmers at Salt & Harrow are dedicated to their craft, and find joy in caring for their soil and their products for the nourishment of the local community. They are a must visit when checking out the market.
Another favourite spot, offering locally made sweet treats, is Sugarplum Shortbread British Baking Company. Their traditionally made Scottish Shortbread is melt-in-your-mouth wonderful and makes for the perfect afternoon coffee pairing or host gift (tip: they offer a signature trio box). Their offerings range from traditional shortbread to intense flavour-infused offerings including lavender, earl grey and meyer lemon, among many others. Their savoury options offer a great and unexpected pairing for a charcuterie board; consider sampling the sage, onion and cheddar with cracked black pepper. The locally made shortbread is handcrafted, family-owned and works with local suppliers to source its fresh ingredients. Sugarplum Shortbread, located in the Red Barn, gives us a lot of reasons to love their goods, not least of all the incredible taste of their baking.
When it comes to Saturdays at the market, there are so many incredible vendors to spotlight and we hope you’ll come for a visit this summer to check them out for yourself. Beyond edible goods, the market also offers books and crafts and other forms of entertainment for young kids, making it a favourite spot for families. Be sure to check out the Southlands Grange Centre for Farming and Food website for more information and visit their Instagram (@southlandsgrange) for a weekly vendor list and details about upcoming events, as vendors vary from week to week. We can’t wait to see you soon!
